Taking Credit/Debit Card Payments Online

Brand New Online Businesses

Unsure how many sales your new website will get? Haven’t decided whether you really need a full online payment option yet? Try Paypal initially as it is very easy to integrate their software into your website and their name is internationally recognized.

Visa, Maestro, Cirrus, Switch, Solo, Amex Logos

If you run a shop or mail order business you may already have a Mail Order/Telephone Order (MOTO) Merchant Account to accept “offline” transactions for credit/debit cards via a special terminal (often called PDQ machines), This system can still be used for your website, but any credit/debit card details need to be encrypted if you need to send the data from an online order form to a database or admin suite (for you to process manually). For this you will require an SSL Certificate which provides 128-bit encryption and security against hackers.

Should you wish to accept wholly “online” transactions via your website then you will need to contact your bank and apply for an IMA (Internet Merchant Account) this can cost around £200 but charges do vary depending on the size of the business and your relationship with the bank. At this stage you may wish to request the banks’ tariff of charges for online transactions and decide whether it will be cost effective.

Available UK Merchant Accounts

Once that has been done we recommend you open an account with an Online Payment Gateway (such as Protx or WorldPay) who can handle the credit/debit card payments via their secure server. Once the customer clicks “Buy Now” they are redirected to the secure area of the Online Payment Gateway provider to enter their card details. Once completed the customer is returned to your website, often to a “Thank You for Your Order” page.

How much extra does this cost?

There are plenty of alternative Payment Service Providers (PSP’s).

Here are some additional 3rd party companies who currently submit data on behalf of merchants to Cardnet.
